Smart Material Display – Shape studies

_Design Research,_Interface Design,_Prototyping,_Smart Material Interface

Shape studies Geometry of the basic shape

The following questions were important for the shape studies

  • Which shape can be combined to form a visually appealing matrix with the greatest possible change in shape? Rectangle – Triangle – Rhombus – Parallelogram
  • What is the optimal size of this shape?
  • In which combination does the basic shape produce the most effective patterns?
  • What sequences are possible (straight, rotated, offset, counter-rotated)?
  • How many individual basic shapes (with one or two degrees of freedom) are required for a module that can visualise a data set?
  • What movement choreographies are possible?

Other criteria were taken into account

  • Optimal use of the production area
  • Little material waste
  • Appropriate size for a spatial object
